Edward Raymond Ames was born in Amesville, Ohio, May 20, 1806 and died in Baltimore, April 25, 1879. He studied at the University of Ohio. He became a Methodist, and in 1828, traveled to Illinois, where, in Lebanon, he founded the school which later became McKendree College. In 1830 Ames joined the Indiana Methodist Episcopal conference, became a traveling preacher, and rode through the South and West, and among the Indian tribes, a distance of more than 25,000 miles. From a small beginning in May 1932, the Methodist Crusaders Choir, then with 75 choristers, was hurriedly formed and made its first public appearance at the General Conference Meetings of the Methodist Church of Australasia.
